I've spent more than twenty years in management, leadership and training roles across the communications and pharmaceutical industries — leading field teams, designing and delivering nationwide training programmes, and holding a recognised trainer accreditation along the way. For a period I also ran my own private hire business, so I've hired people myself, not just read about it.
Somewhere in that time, I sat on the other side of the hiring desk more times than I can count — reading CVs, running interviews, and deciding who got the next call back. What struck me, again and again, was how many genuinely capable graduates undersold themselves. Not because they lacked ability, but because they didn't yet know how to show it, and because they doubted themselves enough to hold back on the applications where they'd have had a real shot.
